Unforgettable Memories

This was written for my 5th speech project – “Your body speaks” in Toastmasters. I thought it would be better to select a story or experience kind of thing where you can explain/elaborate things using expressions and gestures. I guess my body spoke quite well. :)

How many of you like beach and Sea?  I do like them a lot But I’m so scared to get into the water especially Sea. I’m scared even to soak my legs at the shore. If I see the waves coming even tiny ones I’ll take a step back. Do you think I’m that brave? :) Well, one terrific experience in my life has made me have a water phobia.

When I was doing my internship at Virtusa we as a team went on a team outing to a beach side hotel in Negombo. It was the last quarter of the year; November or December; a rainy season. We were advised not to go into the sea as it was very rough and huge waves were there. No one listened to it and all of us got into the sea. We all stood in a row holding each others hands. I was at the right end next to my university friend that also was with me there as an intern. I was holding her hand. We were watching the waves coming and going and enjoying the gentle touch of the water waves. Suddenly a huge wave came and that’s it. I just was pulled in and I was not sure what happened to others. The wave may not be that big as Tsunami but still a huge wave and no one could not help much. I slightly remember I was floating on the water in a 8 or 10 feet height.  I did not believe that there is a way to escape and it looked like waves going to take me more towards inside the Sea. What’s next? That’s it. That’s the end of the story I thought. It was my 3rd year in the university and still I was not used to Colombo life. The major worry came into my mind is that I’m going to die in an unknown place which is far away from my home or home town and I thought my parents might not even get my body if I died.  Feelings were overflowing and haunting me.

Then the magic happened. Another giant wave or may be the same wave came and pushed me to the shore. Once I reached towards the shore the people held me tightly and pulled me to the shore.  All these happened within a couple of minutes but it looked like an era.
Then only I realized not just me there were few others also pulled in.  Thank God. Everyone was safe at the end. I think that the undeniable destiny did not let us pass away.

As far as I remember it is the one and only near to death experience in my life so far. :)
